Amsterdams Red Light District

Don't let Amsterdams Red Light District scare you away. For the most part the area is set up for tourists provided you go there at the right time of day. The district can trace it's routes back to the time of the early Dutch explorers and has thrived ever since. You'll have to decide for yourself if you feel comfortable seeing this side of Amsterdam . To be honest with you I have placed it in the top ten because of the spectacle of it. Between about 9pm until midnight it is swamped with tourists and relatively safe plus it certainly is unique. The streets are lined with windows and doors each having there own light above the door. The girls stand in the windows and strut there stuff trying to lure in potential customers. Once they have trapped there prey the light goes off and the curtain on the window closes and they get down to business. At peak tourist hours it is rare to see anyone enter a room on the main streets however on some of the back alleys and side streets the girls are kept quite busy.

Sex clubs and stores also line the streets, as well as Amsterdam's famous cafe's. Many tourists decide to take in a sex show, but it's not cheap and can cost as much as 50 euros. During the day the area is actually quite beatiful with the tree lined canals and without all the hustle and bustle of the evening. Make sure you stay away after midnight because it can get a little bit scarey. Take a look at my map of Amsterdam for the location of Amsterdams Red Light District. If you are planning on visiting Amsterdams red light district just after dinner then why not enjoy your dinner in Chinatown which is actually right next to Amsterdams red light district. The food is authentic and excellent, some of the best Chinese food I have ever had was in Amsterdam.

Here are some things you should remember: Never take pictures of the girls, if you do you are asking for trouble. Be mindful of pickpockets and never travel alone. You'll see huge tour groups and they tend to attract alot of attention. Just be aware of what is going on around you and you'll be fine.
