Brussels Market Square
The Grand Place
The Grand Place ( Brussels market square ) is in my opinion the most beautiful square in Europe. I remember the first time I visited Brussels and made my way into the square in the evening. I was overwhelmed by what I saw. At night the lights on all the buildings takes your breath away. Since then Brussels has been one of my favorite cities for a number of reasons.
Originally, it acted as Brussels market square and was a place where people could sell their goods. In the 14th century the rich and powerful began building large mansions around the square, these were known as Guild houses. Eventually the Town hall was built and the Grand place became the center of life in Brussels. The gothic architecture dates back to the 13th century. The spire rises 315 feet and is adorned by St Michael. Tours are available daily of the interior. The square was even the site for executions.
In the late 1600's the square was completed destroyed by the French but it was quickly rebuilt to look much the same as it did before.Today the square is a tourist attraction. The square itself is made of cobblestone and is surrounded by bars and restaurants. If you're looking for a great place to dine why not try Le Cave du Roi which has a typical Belgian menu. Or maybe you just want to have a drink. Why not try, what I think is the best beer in the world, a Jupiler at one of the many terraces that surround the square. The
Manneken Pis
is only a short walk away and so are the numerous Belgian Chocolate shops and
Belgian waffles
stands. Make sure you watch your wasteline.
Brussels market square "The Grand Place" will surely make your European vacation that much better. Check out my Grand Place video below.
