Checkpoint Charlie Museum

Make sure you visit the Checkpoint Charlie museum while you're in Berlin. I would say it's one of Berlins best museums and it's interesting. It's just across the street from Ceckpoint Charlie so it's very easy to get to. Just about everyone who visits Berlin makes a stop at the old checkpoint.

Checkpoint Charlie was the U.S. point of entry in and out of East and West Berlin up until the late 80's. It, of course, fell at the same time as the Berlin wall came down. On one side you had East Berlin and the heavily armed Soviet and East German border guards, while on the West side you had American troops. The crossing was usually only used by diplomats and those who had special permission to travel from East to West. Many individuals tried to cross this checkpoint and reach freedom in the West. Some made it but many others died in the attempt.

The Checkpoint Charlie museum tries to show you what it must have been like to live under communist rule and how some people tried to change history. The museum gives you a look at the history of the Berlin wall and there are many exhibits which show you the ways people tried to escape. Some people tunneled while others hid in the trunks of cars or in luggage. In many ways the museum main focus is to document the struggle of those who wished to be free.

During the high season there will be a long line so get there early. If you wish to see any of the films in the cinema they run every two hours starting at 9:30am
