Englischer Garten
When you visit Munich you have to check out the Englischer Garten (English Garden). It is the largest urban park in Europe and extends from the city center to the northeast. It covers approximately 3.7 square km and is bigger than central park in New York.
The park is a mix of forest and open spaces with an extensive system of footpaths and bike paths. The northern part of the park is called the Hirschau and is much more secluded than the south. The Hirschau has two beer gardens wich attract all sorts of people on nice days.
Another section of the park is known as the Kleinhesseloher See (lake). People spend time by the lake lounging around or on the paddle boats that are available for rent. The Seehaus is a 2500 seat beer garden located near the lake.
The Chinesischer turm is another section of the Englischer Garten which is easy tofind if you look for the large pagoda and the huge beer garden that surround it. This place is fantastic and with 7000 seats there is always fun to be had at the beer garden. The food here is typically Bavarian and it is excellent. You can get sausages or pigs knuckles as well as roast chicken and other favorites at good prices. It’s a great place to spend the afternoon.
The Schönfeldwiese is an area of the park known for nude sunbathing and on a hot sunny day it is packed with people. This area in itself has become quite an attraction. In the summer at the start of the river you can see people surfing on the standing wave that is formed by the fast moving water.
Hope you enjoy the Englischer Garten and the rest of your European vacation.
