Facts About England

Tourist Regions

I want to give you some interesting facts about England before you start to plan your vacation to Europe. The usual starting point for anyone traveling to England is a stop in London. So many people never take the opportunity to travel outside of London and see what the rest of the country has to offer but I have to admit that your trip wouldn’t be complete without a few days in one of the world’s greatest cities.

To put it quite simply London is a vast city. If you wanted to, your whole vacation could be spent exploring London. The secret is to organize your time and get the most out of what the city has to offer. London is a terrific walking city so I have set up several walking tours that allow you to see all the sights without exhausting yourself. However, if walking is not your cup of tea London’s underground will get you where you want to go fast. Remember there is more to London than Buckingham Palace, Take in a play and enjoy some fine cuisine. The city is very cosmopolitan and this mix of cultures adds a flare to the city.

The real England lies outside the city limits of London. The English countryside, with its thatched roof homes, is picture perfect. There are many regions and counties each with distinct features and customs, even the English can sound different. Now we’ll discover some facts about England that you may not be so familiar with.

From this point on I’ll discuss the various regions of England. I’ll have much more detailed information on my other pages. The country is divided into 9 regions with London being a region on its own. The West Country consists of the counties in the western part of the country that border the Atlantic Ocean as well as the English Channel and the Irish Sea. Bristol is the largest city in a region that has so much to offer that it would be pointless to list all of the information on this page. However, some popular attractions are Land’s End, Dartmoor, Exmoor ,Bath, Stonehenge and the tourist towns along the coast. The weather tends to be warmer in this region.

The center of the country if called the Midlands and contains the following regions, East Anglia, East Midlands and the West Midlands. East Anglia lies to the north of London and contains cities such as Cambridge. In the East Midlands you’ll find the cities of Derby and Nottingham while in the West Midlands you get in to the industrial heart of the country and the cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Stoke-on-Trent.

In the North there are the regions of Yorkshire, the North West and the North East. Yorkshire is considered the most beautiful region of the country and contains the cities of York, Leeds and Sheffield just to name a few. The Yorkshire Moors are a popular destination. The North West is home to some heavily industrialized cities such as Liverpool and Manchester. For many years it wasn’t an attractive tourist option but that has changed recently. The area has a rugged beauty and has managed to clean itself up over the years. The North East region borders Scotland and is famous for Hadrian’s Wall and numerous Roman ruins. It’s also the least populated region of England.

I hope these facts about England will help you plan the best European vacation ever. For more facts about England and more detailed information on each region and the counties check out all of my links.
