Let’s get to know some facts about Great Britain before you start to plan your European vacation. Great Britain includes the countries of England, Scotland and Wales. Scotland and Wales are not fully independent countries in the traditional sense of the word but they do see themselves as being very different than England.There are so many opportunities for the traveler in Great Britain that it would be impossible to list them all. Most visitors will start there trip in England and in most cases they’ll arrive in London. London is arguably the world’s greatest city. No matter how you look at it London has everything you would ever want. It’s a city that has something to offer any age group and can be a wonderful destination for families. Some people consider it to be expensive but if you take the time to shop around there are plenty of good deals to be found. Anyone considering a trip to London should give themselves at least 4 days to get a feel for the city.

Outside of the London the travel opportunities are abundant. The Southwest offers some great scenery and nice beaches. The Midlands have a rich history with quaint towns and villages. The Northern regions offer a change in landscape and provide ample opportunities for those interested in the outdoors, while the Southeast, which is known as England’s breadbasket, has a charm all its own.

Anyone considering a trip to England should explore all of the options available. Some of the best experiences may occur where you least expect them. Get adventurous and take a risk. The rewards will be worth it.

Moving on with more facts about Great Britain brings us to Scotland. This is a truly magnificent country located to the north of England. It was once an independent country which has rediscovered its past and seems to be making progress towards renewing their independence. The two main cities are Edinburgh and Glasgow. Each of these cities offers a unique look at Scottish culture. Edinburgh is the capital with Edinburgh castle as the backdrop. It’s a magnificent city with a rich history. It’s often referred to as the “Athens of the north” because of the architecture. Edinburgh is a great walking town and has plenty to see for young and old.

Glasgow, on the other hand, was once a heavily industrialized city which has seen a modern rebirth. The number of tourists visiting the city is on the rise and many Scots are making it there home. Even though it doesn’t have the history that Edinburgh has there is still plenty to see and do. Here’s a fact about Great Britain you may not have known. For many Glasgow was the starting place of the industrial revolution which soon spread around the world.

The charm of Scotland can be found in the highlands. It’s here that the Scottish clan system began and it’s the home of tartan, bagpipes not to mention Scotch Whiskey. Take the time to go on a whiskey tour while you travel in the highlands. The distilleries are everywhere and will certainly give you a new perspective on this old process. Likewise any trip to Scotland should include a round of golf or a least a trip to St. Andrew’s. The home of golf will leave you breathless not to mention frustrated. Like Scotland, Wales is a very unique place. The first thing you will notice is that a good portion of the population speaks Welsh. This ancient language is thriving throughout the country and makes Wales a very special place. There is plenty to see and do but it’s really the landscape and the people that keep visitors coming back for more. There are of course the usual castles and ancient ruins but the real charm comes from visiting the small villages and towns throughout the country and getting to know people at the local pub.

The capital is Cardiff which has been around since Roman times. Even though it’s not a large city Cardiff still offers what most big cities have and a little charm as well. Cardiff is usually thr starting point for most people when they consider Wales as a destination. From London it only takes a few hours by train to get there and you can also get a connecting flight from London or other cities in England.
