Facts About Portugal

Portugal's Vacation Destinations

I have some interesting travel information and facts about Portugal to help you plan Your European vacation to this fascinating country. There are several reasons why you should try and plan a trip to Portugal. First, it is still has the best travel value in Western Europe. Second, the landscape is diverse from rich green mountains to Rocky desert like shores. It also has a very unique culture and a way of life suited to those who would really like to have a break from everything.

Let’s start in the north of the country and the city of Porto. The country gets its name from this important city famous for port wine. It has a bustling downtown core with stunning architecture. There are several churches worth seeing such as church of Cedofeita and the church of São Francisco. The city also has some great museums and don’t forget to get a free taste of port.

  • The Douro region
  • North East Region of Trás-os-Montes
  • The Coastal Region of Minho
  • The central area of the country is characterized by the beaches and fishing villages along the coast and the mountainous area inland. The region as a whole is known as Beiras. The interior is dominated by the Estrela Mountain Range which is covered with ancient forests and offers plenty to the outdoorsman. There are many small towns which were once guarded by the castles which now act as tourist attractions. Some of the towns worth visiting in this area are Coimbra, Aveiro, Viseu, Guarda and Castelo Branco.

    The capital of Portugal is Lisbon which was built along the banks of the Tagus River. The city has medieval feel to it. However, you shouldn’t forget that many of the early explorers came from Portugal and evidence of the countries rich history is scattered all over the capital. It’s a great city to have fun in, especially at night. Although this region is dominated by Lisbon there are many other sites to see outside of the city. Many are only a short drive from the capital.

    To the south of Lisbon is the region of Alentejo. Unlike the other regions of Portugal this area of the country is relatively flat. It’s also very hot. Some of Portugal’s most beautiful villages and towns are located in this region. The beaches along the Atlantic in the western part of the country are magnificent.

    Finally, there is the Algarve region of Portugal. The Algarve is famous for having the world’s best beaches, the best climate in Portugal and a fantastic atmosphere. This is the wealthiest region of the country. Accommodations range from minimal to glamorous but one thing is for sure you’ll have a European vacation you’ll never forget. There are many quaint little towns and villages in this region as well. If you’re sick of the beach then just head inland and enjoy what the area has to offer.
