Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Zundert,
Netherlands
. His father was a preacher and the church was a very important part of his life in his early years. In 1880 Van Gogh decided to become an artist but wondered if he was in conflict with the church. He moved to Brussels and considered enrolling in an art school but instead he chose to study on his own. Van Gogh always struggled for money and relied on his brother Theo to keep him afloat. Most of the information on Vincent Van Gogh came from Theo. Due to a family conflict his faith began to disappear and the church was no longer an important part of his life.
In 1881, while in the Hague he was introduced to watercolor and oil techniques by a cousin. In 1882 he painted his first watercolor as well as being commissioned for the first time (pen and ink drawings). Van Gogh kept moving in and out with his parents and there relationship was a rocky one. In 1883 he painted peasents in the Dutch countryside. The paintings were dark and were a prelude to his first masterpiece the Potato Eaters.

because he had difficulty finding models. In 1885 he went to Antwerp and was influenced by Rubens. he enrolled in an art school but soon he quit because he didn't have the patience for the academic world. In 1886 he went tp Paris to live with his brother Theo and becomes familiar with Monet and other impressionists. In Paris he begins to form his own style which is a combination of what hhe has been exposed to up until that point. His work becomes brighter and he begins to start self portraits because he can't affoard models. He painted 20 self portraits of himself in Paris such as Self-Portrait as an Artist. One of Van Goghs dreams was to have an artists community where evryone shared there styles and work.
In 1888 Van Gogh moved to the south of France and rented a studio(Yellow House). He invited Gauguin to spend time with him and painted numerous sunflower paintings. He began focussing on the landscape in Provence such as flowers and rural life. Gaugin and Van Gogh worked together for nine weeks but they eventually have a falling out and it is at this point while threatening Gauguin with a razor he cuts off part of his left ear. He is admitted to a hospital until 1889. After his discharge from the hospital in Arles, Van Gogh was unable to organize his life or set up a new studio. He believed his breakdown was because of excessive drinking. While in Arles and Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh sent his paintings to Theo in Paris. Despite his illness, he produced one masterpiece after another in this period, such as Irises, Cypresses, and The Starry Night. Searching for an alternative to his confinement at Saint-Rémy, in May 1890 Van Gogh left for Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris so he could visit Theo.Van Gogh started painting portraits of his friends and the local landscape, including nearby wheatfields. Working with great intensity, he produced nearly a painting a day over the next two months. A series of 12 canvases in a distinctive panoramic format celebrates country life: In 1890, Van Gogh walked into a wheat field and shot himself he died two days later.
