Tourist Attractions and Landmarks in Spain

There are some wonderful tourist attractions and landmarks in Spain for the adventurous traveler. Spain is a vast country covering the Iberian Peninsula. For many vacationers Spain is the only place they’ll visit on a European vacation. The beauty of traveling to this country is that there is plenty to do if you just stay in Spain or you can just stop in for a visit while traveling around the remainder of Europe.

First, let’s break the country down into its regions so we can see what each area has to offer. Landmarks in Spain are scattered across the countries 17 regions. Each region is autonomous and has unique cultures and customs. Let me begin by listing the regions:

  • Andalucia – Located in the south of Spain it is known for its beaches along the Costa del Sol. Cities: Cordoba, Granada, Sevilla
  • Aragon – Region of Spain to the north bordering Catalonia. Mountainous area
  • Asturias – Located in the northwest. Another mountainous area bordering the Cantabrian Sea.
  • Balearic Islands - a series of islands in the Mediterranean
  • Basque – Very autonomous region to the north along the Cantabrian Sea.
  • Canary Islands – Located in the Atlantic just west of Africa.
  • Cantabria – Region along the northern coast. City: Santander
  • Castile-La-Mancha – Desert like region in the center of the country and home to Don Quixote (fictional)
  • Castile and Leon – Located in the northwest bordering northern Portugal.
  • Catalonia - A region of Spain along the Mediterranean in the northeast. Cities: Barcelona, Lleida
  • Extremadura – Relatively untouched area bordering Portugal.
  • Galicia – Located in the extreme northeast above Portugal. Spectacular cliffs.
  • La Rioja – One of the smallest regions which is known for its wine.
  • Madrid – The capital region of Spain. Madrid is the main city.
  • Murcia – Located in the southeast along the Mediterranean coast.
  • Navarra – A region in the far north bordering France.
  • Valencia – A beautiful coastal region along the Mediterranean. Cities: Valencia, Alicante.
  • Much of what Spain has to offer is located in the cities and towns. I’ll talk about landmarks in Spain on each of my city pages. Also, Spain has some outstanding coastal areas worth discovering. Now I’d like to list some of the cities that are worth a visit:
