Manneken Pis Statue

The Manneken Pis statue is perhaps the most famous statue in Brussels and argueably one of the most famous statues in the world. My first encounter with the little guy was a little bit of a shock and I do mean little!!! Just after you leave the Grand Place and make your way down Eikstraat/Rue du Chene street past a few Belgian Chocolate stores and a few Belgian Waffle shops and all of a sudden there he is. At first you look around for the nearest local and say "is that him?" and they nod and say "oui". It is by far the most dissappointing attraction when you first see him. He's about 2 feet tall at best and he's surrounded by this god awful fountain. But if you just give him a few minutes he kind of grows on you.

The Manneken Pis statue has actually been a tourist attraction for a couple of hundred years and quite often you can see him all dressed up in his various costumes that are at the nearby museum. there are about 600 costumes in total that the little guy has worn over the years. You have to have your picture taken next to him but sometimes it can be difficult getting near him in the middle of the summer. If it is busy I like to take the opportunity to go across the street the the Mannekin Pis bar and enjoy that Jupiler I've been talking about. It's a fantastic little bar with a great atmosphere and you can watch everyone's look of surprise when they see the Manneken Pis statue. There are plenty of souvenir shops around if you want a momento of the occasion.
