The square is surrounded by many historic buildings such as the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk (New church). Madame Tussaud's wax museum is at the heart of the square and has become one of Amsterdam's attractions that is popular with tourists. If you look at the map of Dam Square you'll see where each of the sites are located. The Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky also overlooks the square as does the nearby diamond district. The square actually marks the original location of the first dam erected on the Amstel river, around 1270. Eventually, the area around the dam greww large enought o accomodate a square and so Dam Square was born. As is the case with most squares in Europe it originally acted as a market square where local farmers and fisherman could sell their food. In 1956 the national monument was added to the square and recognizes the sacrifices made by the Dutch and others during World War II. I hope this information helps you plan your European vacation.
