The Marienplatz in Munich

Want to find out about the Marienplatz in Munich. First of all, you've probably figured out that I love
Munich
, so I'm going to share some of my personal thoughts with you about the Marienplatz in Munich. I always stay in a hotel just down the road from the train station which means I have about a 15-20 minute walk to the Marienplatz(town center). I like the walk on Neuhauser Strasse because there are a whole bunch of lttle fast food places along the way as well as some internet cafe's. Neuhauser Strasse becomes Kaufinger, around the city gates, which is a pedestrian mall that brings you all the way to the Marienplatz. There is some great shopping on this street and a few beer halls if your so inclined.
You eventually pass the church with the two towers, the Frauenkirche or Church of Our Lady, which is a symbol of
Munich
. No building in Munich is allowed to be taller than the church towers. There's a great wild boar to get your picture taken on as well. In a couple of minutes you'll be in the Marienplatz and if it's close to 11am you're in for a spectacle.
At 11 o'clock the Glock does it's thing. You have to picture this for a minute, a few thousand tourists in the Marienplatz looking up at a clock which puts on a very boring show. I like to have fun with the crowd by letting out a few OOHS and AHHS. It's a riot. The Glockenspiel is on the New City Hall (Neues Rathaus) and people gather 3 times everyday 11, 12 and 17 hundred to watch the Cooper's Dance. Everyone has to see it but don't get your hopes up.
The Old Town Hall(Alte Rathaus) was completely destroyed by fire in 1460. Around 1470 the Old Town Hall was rebuilt in the Gothic style only to be destroyed in bombings during World war II. Ironically the Old Town Hall looks newer than the New Town Hall which was rebuilt after the war. The Marienplatz in Munich is a common meeting place for tours and a place to people watch.
The Marienplatz in Munich basically becomes your starting point for discovering Munich. It really gives you a sense of what the city is all about. Enjoy your European Vacation.
