Munich Food Market

Viktualienmarkt

One of my favorite things to do is go to the Munich food market, or the Viktualienmarkt as locals call it. I remember my first trip to Munich, when the friend that I was traveling with suggested that we go to the market, just down the road from the Marienplatz

. When I first saw it, it looked alot like a farmers market at home and I thought what's the big deal? Once I turned the corner I saw the beer garden. Wow!! You should have seen the people!! I was sold!! We must have spent at least 5 hours firing back the best beer I had tasted up until that point on my trip.

The Viktualienmarkt is easy to get to and I have it marked on my Munich walking tour map. Just head toward the Old Town Hall (Alte Rathaus) and make a right and there it is. The Marienplatz use to act as the Munich food market but it was moved not so long ago to it's current location.

The beer garden is surrounded by all sorts of German specialty shops. There are plenty of butcher's and some fantastic looking meat. Pork is the meat of choice in Germany and it's everywhere. In the butcher shops they usually sell this great mustard called

"Senf" . Senf is a sweet mustard which is excellent with sausages and pretzels. Local produce is also for sale at stalls surrounding the beer garden. As well, you can find some nice Bavarian restaurants which serve traditional food.

In the late summer and early fall this place is magical, especially during Oktoberfest. In the beer garden it's difficult to find a seat but be patient and you'll find one. Everyday they serve a different beer from one of the local breweries. You can have a litre glass or a half litre depending on how you feel from your night at the Hofbrauhaus . That's the great thing about European beer, No Hangover!! It must be because it's so fresh. I explain the beer in more detail on my beer page.

Make sure you stop at the Munich food market ( Viktualienmarkt) on your European vacation. You'll definately remember it. One more thing, we always like to call a friend back home and rub it in while we suck back a cold one. It's good fun!!

Discover Munich!!
