Munich Tourist Information

If you're looking for Munich tourist information I pretty sure I can help you out. If you decide to make a trip to Germany you're pretty much guarenteed to have a good time in Munich. The spring and summer months are fantastic and the weather is usually cooperative but Munich comes alive in the fall with Oktoberfest which usually occurs around the end of september and the beginning of October. Normally Munich is a very vibrant city but during Oktoberfest it borders on being out of control (in a good way).

You see Munich is the capital of Bavaria and Bavaria is the beer drinking capital of Germany, if not the world, and Oktoberfest is synonomous with beer and food. To get a year round feeling of what Oktoberfest must be like then all you have to do is take a trip to the Hofbrauhaus . The Hofbrauhaus is a traditional German beer hall with a uniquely Bavarian atmosphere. Enjoy the beer the food and the other tourists and locals who frequent this icon of Munich.

To get your tour of Munich started you should make your way to the Marienplatz which is the main square in Munich. Here you'll find Munich tourist information and generally most tours start from here. In the center of the square is the Neues Rathaus(new city hall) and home of the worlds most famous clock the Glockenspiel. The Glock puts on a show 3 times a day for the awestruck tourists who fill the square.

Munich is a people watching town so take the time to relax and have a beer in the numerous beer gardens throughout the city. This is what the people of munich do so why not you. Remember the beer in Germany is much fresher than what most people are used to and it tends to taste different and go down easier.

Every time I have gone to Munich I have taken a bike tour of the city and the local park the Englischer Garten or English Garden which is Euorpe's largest urban park. The Isar river flows through the center of the park which is beautiful in the summer and is a place where many locals hang out. Don't be surprised if you see many nude people sunbathing, this is normal in Germany.

If you're into shopping then you need to take a trip down Kaufinger strasse which is a beautiful pedestrian walkway that takes you from near the Hauptbanhoff( train station) to the Marienplatz
(Check out my walking tour map) This street is always crowded with people and gives you a good sense of what Munich is all about. Unlike Frankfurt which built new after the war Munich chose to rebuild the old buildings just the way they were so it tends to feel a little older even though it's quite new. Munich wasn't damaged nearly as bad as Berlin was during the war so many of the old buildings still stand.

The train station is a great place to get Munich tourist information and a great place to get just about anything after hours or on holidays.

If you're willing to leave the city center for a while then you should think about taking a trip to the olympic stadium which was home to the 1972 summer olympics and the site of the infamous Munich massacre. Today you can use the pool and sauna facilities which are very popular.

Another side trip is to Fussen and King Ludwigs castle, Neuschwansein. Which the disney castle was modelled after. It is located in the Bavarian alps and gives you the opportunity to have a picnic or take a hike.

One thing you have to do on your European vacation is travel about 45 min outside of the city to Dachau Concentration Camp . Dachau was the Nazi's first concentration camp and it has been preserved to act as a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. Be warned it is a very sobering experience.

Back in Munich there are all sorts of museums you can visit such as the Deutsches museum which focuses on science and engineering. This museum is fantastic for kids and adults alike. Check the bottom of my page for a list of all the museums available and more Munich tourist information.

Below you'll find more Munich tourist information and links to all the attraction in Munich worth seeing. Check out my Munich walking tour map as well. I hope you have a great time in Munich and a terrific European vacation.
