The Oude Kerk Amsterdam is the oldest church in Amsterdam and the oldest building in the city. It is located in one of the oldest districts in the city and is actually in the center of the red light district. The church dates back to the 13th century. Before the Protestant Reformation the church was Roman Catholic, and afterwords it was taken over by the Dutch Reformed Church.

On November 12 and 13th there is an entrance fee of €12.50 for national art dayThe church is quite large and is over 3000 m². The main feature of the church is the vaulted wooden ceiling, which was built in the 1300s. The floor of the church is made up of 2500 tombs, which contain the remains of as many as 10,000 people. Rembrandts wife is buried in the church. Rembrandt was a frequent visitor to the church during his life.
Music has always been an important part of the Protestant church. Like other churches in Amsterdam, the Oude Kerk Amsterdam contains some impressive pipe organs. The Oude Kerk Amsterdam has 3 of these organs. The oldest organ was built in 1658. The other 2 were built in 1724 and 1767.
