Places to See in Germany

Tourist Attractions in Germany

Germany is a must see on your European vacation. There are so many places to see in Germany that it would be impossible to see them all in one trip. I'll try and help you out by showing you the main tourist attractions in Germany and a few of the lesser known destinations. I'll also throw in some interesting facts about Germany along the way.

The top places to see in Germany are usually located in or close to a large city. For instance a trip to Berlin will provide you with the opportunity to see one of Europe's great cities both in it's history but also in it's latest growth since the reunification of Germany. A trip to Berlin will provide you with the opportunity to see first hand the effects of World War II.A list of the places to see are located at the bottom of the page. Many of the buildings still have bullet marks in them and the feeling of what the war must have been like seems to still be present. It's a great place for the history buff. You might want to visit the recently finished Holocaust Memorial just down the road from the Brandenburg gate.

The Soviet occupation is also very evident with the reminents of the Berlin wall and Checkpoint Charlie. A visit to the Checkpoint Charlie museum is worth it for sure. For a real sense of what communist rule was like take a stroll down Karl Marx strasse to the Alexandre Platz.

If you're into shopping Berlin has it all and has some great shopping streets. You should consider visiting Potsdamer Platz which has been reborn since the reunification. Berlin also has some great museums such as the Pergamon, which is definately one of the places to see in Germany, and some great churches as well.

After the war many cities were completely destroyed and had to make the decision whether to rebuild the old buildings or start from scratch. Frankfurt chose to build a new modern city based on a western model (skysrapers). Today Frankfurt is the financial capital of Germany and has a vibrant nightlife with trendy reataurants and clubs. It is also known as Germany's fashion capital although Berlin is catching up.

Between Frankfurt and Berlin you'll find Buchenwald concentration camp. Any trip to Germany should include a concentration camp as a way of remembering what happened during the war. It is a sobering experience to say the least. Buchenwald as well as other camps such as Dachau have been made into ongoing memorials for the victims of the Holocaust. I'll list all of the camps that you can visit at the bottom of the page.

If you want to go back in time you should think of visiting Rothenburg. It is Germany's last walled city and the architecture brings you back in time. Consider taking the night watch tour to get a good feeling and history of the town.

Just to the south of Rothenburg is the region known as Bavaria. The capital of Bavaria is Munich and it has alot to offer. Munich is a beer drinking city and the home of Octoberfest. As a matter of fact Bavaria consumes twice as much beer as the rest of Germany combined. While in Munich enjoy a cold Paulaner while you sit in one of the cities numerous beer gardens or take a stroll through the Englischer Garten which is the largest urban park in Europe. Don't forget to go and visit the Glockenspiel located in the Marienplatz it will make your day. After a long day of touring the city take a trip to the Hofbrauhaus for a typical Bavarian evening of eating and drinking.

If you love the outdoors then make sure you take a trip to the Bavarian alps for some hiking in the summer or skiing in the winter plus all the other outdoor activities it has to offer. A visit to the town of Fussen will give you the opportunity to see Mad King Ludwigs castle, Neuschwanstein, which the Disney castle was modelled after. If that's not your cup of tea then how about a trip to Hitler's Bavarian retreat, Berchtesgaden.

One of the great places to see in Germany is in fact a bunch of places on one river. A trip down the Rhine either by boat, train, car or bike is a vacation all by itself. If you like castles this is the place to be. If you like white wine this is the place to be. In fact this is generally the place to be when you are in Germany. Unlike other tourist attractions in Germany the rhine has a little bit of everything and you'll learn alot of interesting facts about Germany along the way.

Below you'll find a list of all the places to see in Germany so clck on the link and enjoy your European Vacation in Germany.
