Get yourself a street map of Florence Italy and you'll have a great time in the city!! This is the advice I give to all first time travelers to Florence. I have to admit that I haven't spent that much time in Florence, or Firenze as the Italians call it, but what I have seen was wonderful. Although I've been there more than seven times I have only had the opportunity to spend about six hours on each visit. However I've managed to see quite a bit over the years because I had a map of the city and it was a whole lot easier to get around. Here are some of my recommendations.

With you street map of Florence Italy in hand a great place to start is the Ponte Vecchio (old bridge) which crosses the Arno river. The bridge is a great place to shop for jewelry. From the bridge you can make your way to the heart of the old city. Most of the streets in the old section are for pedestrians only which makes it a lot safer.

Florence was the center of the Renaissance and is the world's premiere city for art. It is the capital of Tuscany, which in itself is a highly sought tourist destination. It was at one time the home of the most famous artists in history such as; Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and Dante. The buildings are magnificent but so is the culture. If you like food there may be no better place on earth and the wine is second to none.In other words Florence has it all.

Many tourist use Florence as a base for exploring Tuscany while others like to stay in some of the fabulous villas in the countryside and make day trips to the city. It really depends on what you would prefer to do. Getting to florence is relatively easy if you have a car. Traveling in the city itself with your own car can be a hair raising experience to say the least. You may be better to park on the outskirts of the city and take public transportation to the city center. Grab your street amp of Florence Italy and enjoy the day. If you stay in Florence transportation won't be a problem.

Your main activities while visiting Florence will revolve around the following things; food, museums, shopping, more food and more shopping. Shopping is a national pastime in this city so get out the credit card. My favorite place is the leather market. The leather market consists of about 5 square blocks of outdoor stalls that sell just about everything, leather seems to be the most popular item. You can get a real bargain here on leather jackets and purses but remember you have to play the game don't ever pay the list price for an item, try to talk the vendor down. Walk away if you don't get a good enough deal.

Restaurants are everywhere and most of them are good. With your street map of Florence Italy you'l be able to find the better deals on the smaller less traveled streets. Tuscany is the home of Pesto so make sure you try a dish with this ingredient. The house wines in most of the restaurants are excellent and very reasonably priced so enjoy yourself. The local wine is Chianti, which happens to be my personal favorite.

There are so many museums to visit it would be impossible to see them all. So here's a list of the must see museums:

  • Accademia - The home of David
  • Galleria degli Uffizi - Fine art museum
  • Bargello - Renaissance sculpture
  • Institute and Museum of the History of Science - Galileo exhibit

There are also many other attractions that you should see. Here's a list of other attractions

  • Duomo di Firenze - Cathedral in the center of the city
  • Giotto's Tower - Get a great view of the city
  • Ponte Vecchio - Oldest bridge, great for shopping
  • Santa Croce - Famous tombs

Getting to Florence is painless. If you fly into Rome you can either get to Florence by plane or train. I prefer the train because you get to see a little bit of the countryside along the way. The main train station is the Firenze Santa Maria Novella .

There are some great accommodations in the area for every type of budget. I'll be listing some of them shortly.
