Top Ten Attractions in London
I decided to put together a list of the top ten attractions in London to give travelers an idea of what they should try and see or do if they make a trip to this wonderful city. If you happen to be taking a trip to London I would suggest you try to see at least these ten London attractions.
-
Early morning walk - London is a massive city and for a first time visitor it can seem a little bit overwhelming. Before heading out to all the tourist sites take the time to settle in, get out a map and get your bearings. The best way to do this is by taking an early morning stroll through the center of London with your map. If your early enough the streets will be quiet and you can really get a sense of where you are and where you are going. Take a look at my London walking tours for some examples. The morning is my favorite time in the city. Give it a try yourself. I realize that this shouldn't be considered one of the top ten attractions in London but it really is a special thing to do
-
London Pub - After your walk plan out your day at a London Pub. These pub stops will probably be the best part of your trip. Grab a pub lunch and have a pint while you organize the rest of your day. The quality of the pubs in London will vary but there's one thing for certain you'll enjoy yourself! The bartenders in the pub are usually a wealth of information as well
-
British Museum - Make sure you put the British Museum on your itinerary. This free museum provides the visitor with an incredible look back into the past and the exploits of the British Empire. From the Rosetta stone to Lindow Man it's definitely worth the trip.
-
Hyde park - Nothing beats a walk through Hyde park. On Sunday stop by the "speakers corner" and get involved in a lively debate or just take a stroll through the Princess Diana Memorial. There's lots to see and do in the park and it's a great place to people watch.
-
Parliament Buildings - If you're in London you have to see the Parliament buildings and of course Big Ben. You can take a tour of Parliament but make sure you book ahead of time. The concierge at your hotel is the best person for information.
-
Westminster Abbey - Just across the street from Parliament is Westminster Abbey. Go by on a Sunday and you amy even see the Queen. This beautiful cathedral is a must see so pay the admission and take a trip back in time. The highlight are the tombs of some of England's most famous people.
-
Changing of the guard - You have to see the changing of the guard when your in London. It's definitely one of the top ten attractions in London. During the summer they change everyday at 11:30am but in the off season you need to check to find out when they change. It takes place right in front of Buckingham palace so you get to kill two birds with one stone.
-
Covent Garden - This wonderful market area of London has been in operation for centuries. Today it's a great place to shop, eat and people watch. On the weekends it's bustling with people and you can be entertained by endless street performers.
-
St. Paul's Cathedral - Christopher Wren's masterpiece needs to be on your list of London attractions to see. Make sure you walk up to the top of the dome and talk to a friend on the other side. You'll be amazed. Add it to your top ten ten attractions in London.
- Cabinet War Rooms - If you visit London you have to learn a little bit about what it was like during the war. Try and make a stop at the Cabinet war rooms. If you really want to know what World War II was like you have to visit Churchill's war time offices. It's like a trip back in time and the Audio tour is one of the best.
Honorable mention on the list of the top ten attractions in London:
London Eye - Hop on the eye for the most amazing views of the city. This giant ferris wheel is pricey but worth it.
London Theatre - If your in London you have to go and see a play. It's a great way to spend an evening in the city.
I hope this list of the top ten attractions in london will help you plan your European vacation.
